If you happen to live in an area that has hard water coming through the taps, then you’d be wise to invest in a water filter so that you can continue to enjoy a cuppa with your feet up at the end of a long hard day.
This is just one piece of advice from tea-making expert Dr Stuart Farrimond, who has just hit our TV screens as part of series three of Inside the Factory on BBC 2.
According to the Daily Mail, he explained that if you do use a filter before switching the kettle on you can prevent scum forming on cups of tea. He said: “What’s happening is some of the flavour compounds are reacting with the calcium and they form this scummy layer, so you’re actually losing flavour, the flavour is being lost in that scum.”
Other top tea-making tips from the scientist includes brewing your cuppa for five minutes exactly and drinking tea from either a red or pink mug if you want it to taste sweeter. Drinking from a white or blue one will make your tea taste saltier, apparently!
It does depend on where you live as to the kind of water you have. There are advantages and disadvantages to having soft and hard water, but the latter can cause damage to water pipes and appliances so you may opt to have it softened if you’re worried.
If you want to find out whether you have hard water or not, you can measure the hardness by performing a titration with soap solution. Swirl your mixture around to form a lather – the harder your water, the more soap solution you’ll need.
