An article for the Express recently pointed out that swapping sugary fizzy drinks for water can reduce your calorie intake, which is a great place to start. While the newspaper noted that drinking more water alone won’t help you shed the pounds, it can certainly help.
It pointed out that, according to the NHS, some people can mistake thirst for hunger and may therefore end up consuming more calories throughout the day. It also cited research showing that people who drank mostly water consumed an average of 200 fewer calories throughout the day than those who didn’t.
Sugar-free drinks like tea and coffee, as well as low-fat milk, can also be good substitutes if you find water a little boring for your palate.
The newspaper also highlighted a study which found that drinking water can boost your resting energy expenditure. The number of calories you burn can increase by 24 to 30 per cent within ten minutes of drinking water, with the effects lasting for an hour.
